God-bless-america wallpaper

Having lived for so many years on foreign soil made me relaize just how much I truly love and treasure it and what we stand for here.  I thank all those that have fought to give us the Declaration of Independence and to keep this country free.

I meant to post this last night and then today just was really busy as we have a young military family that we have know for years with us.  The house is very busy with small ones.  Neal is the father of these pretty little girls and we first met him(single back then) at church, and eventually his girl friend Natalie.  Their marriage felt like our own children were getting married.  We have been there for each of the births of their little girls, Madeline and Claire.  Neil is now in flight school training with the Air Force and we miss them.  Here is a start of a mini book that I made for them to remember today with us. This is going to be the cover.

Whether you live near the water as we do here in Pensacola or not the lure of the water is great.  Summer nights, sunsets, the sound of waves crashing on the shore – what could be more relaxing? Because these are the sights and sounds of life on the beach – what better way to challenge you all to a fun contest than to invite you to put a taste of of the ocean into one of your creationsBy the sea challenge7a

Here in Pensacola, beautiful sugar white beaches abound; so do grassy parks.  It’s the best of so many worlds…white caps on the gulf or just absolutely flat water, the lone sail boat or the hundreds of boats that dot the waterfront. 4th of Julyfireworks are  spectacular  done from a special boat in the bay giving all a water front viewers or those that actually view from a boat.  The Navy Blue Angles call Pensacola home and that gives us another awesome free treat so many times during the year, but 4th of July and their homecoming are hosted over the coast of Pensacola Beach.  I guess you get the point that we love the water –the bay or the gulf-here in Pensacola.

A By the Sea challenge is perfect for us that live here “where thousands live as millions wish they could” to quote a former Pensacola mayor.  And it is true!

There are two trees in my mother yard, each over 450 years old and said to be the very oldest in the area according to the Florida foresters.  The young children love those trees, who’s branches are larger that most trees…swings, climbing are perfect for the mix of these trees and many a good time will be remembered.  FLLC’s Swing Set is perfect was this challenge….so here is another look at my card for today.

I used Copics for this Challenge–lots of them

By the Sea Challenge Banner

Other items that I used for this fun card were:Copic Colorless Blender to push the colors away to create the sky;Light Blue Silk ribbon which I colored with the BG15 from the Water Collection –how fun is that…I got just the color I wanted;  three beautiful gold filigree flowers from The Finishes Touches Beautiful Brad Collection, Basic Grey and FLLC Classic White paper and Kaiser White Pearls….All available from Flourishes, llc.  So now it is YOUR turn to join the fun….and maybe win some prizes!

HOW TO PLAY: Try to incorporate the “feel” of the sea in one of your creations. It could be with a fun embellishment, a photo or even just a color scheme. Link your creation to this post or upload to Splitcoast using the keyword FLLCJULY. You have until Friday, July 10th at 5 PM Eastern to have your creation uploaded! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!WHAT YOU COULD WIN: All of our new releases that will be revealed starting next Wednesday, July 8th, right here on the Flourishes Newsletter.
To get ready for the big reveal and spark some ideas for our challenge, our Senior Design Team got their creative juices flowing! Here is a peek at a few of their “By The Sea” inspired creations!Christine Okken

We Remember & We Celebrate

First I want to thank you for sticking with me during my absence.  I had very unexpected rotator cuff surgery and have just been released to use my arm & hand…I am glad to have inky fingers again!  Again Thanks…Jan Marie So on to the business at hand.  and yes it is a little late, but I hope worth the read.

Today We Remember with a day set aside for our fallen, men of valor that sleep in cemeteries across the world. I hope you will take a moment to pause and remember these great service members who gave so much so we could live in liberty.
As a young girl growing up, I often took part in the celebration of Memorial Day. Today,as then our Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)give out poppies as a  reminder of these great service members. So many of these traditions have fallen to the wayside, but in a town like Pensacola where the military has such a great presence we still see these and many other like traditions. Our Nation Cemetery, like others around the globe will decorate each headstone with a US flag. Some have a formal retreat at sunset with taps played as candles are lite on each grave. What a heart rendering site.

We Remember, We Cerebrate!

I wanted to also take a moment to share the following poem and the story that follows. Lest we forget.

In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army

.
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow                                                                                                          Between the crosses row on row,                                                                                                                           That mark our place; and in the sky                                                                                                                     The larks, still bravely singing, fly                                                                                                                       Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead.                                                                                                                                                        Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,                                                                              Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:                                                                                                                               To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.                                                                                                                          If ye break faith with us who die                                                                                                                             We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem:
Although he had been a doctor for years and had served in the South African War, it was impossible to get used to the suffering, the screams, and the blood here, and Major John McCrae had seen and heard enough in his dressing station to last him a lifetime.

As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men — Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans — in the Ypres salient.
It had been an ordeal that he had hardly thought possible. McCrae later wrote of it:
“I wish I could embody on paper some of the varied sensations of that seventeen days… Seventeen days of Hades! At the end of the first day if anyone had told us we had to spend seventeen days there, we would have folded our hands and said it could not have been done.”
One death particularly affected McCrae. A young friend and former student, Lieut. Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, had been killed by a shell burst on 2 May 1915. Lieutenant Helmer was buried later that day in the little cemetery outside McCrae’s dressing station, and McCrae had performed the funeral ceremony in the absence of the chaplain.
The next day, sitting on the back of an ambulance parked near the dressing station beside the Canal de l’Yser, just a few hundred yards north of Ypres, McCrae vented his anguish by composing a poem. The major was no stranger to writing, having authored several medical texts besides dabbling in poetry.
In the nearby cemetery, McCrae could see the wild poppies that sprang up in the ditches in that part of Europe, and he spent twenty minutes of precious rest time scribbling fifteen lines of verse in a notebook.
A young soldier watched him write it. Cyril Allinson, a twenty-two year old sergeant-major, was delivering mail that day when he spotted McCrae. The major looked up as Allinson approached, then went on writing while the sergeant-major stood there quietly. “His face was very tired but calm as we wrote,” Allinson recalled. “He looked around from time to time, his eyes straying to Helmer’s grave.”
When McCrae finished five minutes later, he took his mail from Allinson and, without saying a word, handed his pad to the young NCO. Allinson was moved by what he read:

In fact, it was very nearly not published. Dissatisfied with it, McCrae tossed the poem away, but a fellow officer retrieved it and sent it to newspapers in England. The Spectator, in London, rejected it, but Punch published it on 8 December 1915.

“The poem was exactly an exact description of the scene in front of us both. He used the word blow in that line because the poppies actually were being blown that morning by a gentle east wind. It never occurred to me at that time that it would ever be published. It seemed to me just an exact description of the scene.”

On our third day of Sneak Peeks….let me share with you,,,,,

another Marcella original for Flourishes, and it’s a background.  This lovely and versatile introduction will work with so many Flourishes images and it is actually a companion image of our recently released Thinking of You.

For my introduction piece I used the Vintage Wallpaper background, but for the romantic and nostalgic look I have been feeling this week I chose to use Sweet Violets again.

viintage-wallpaper-sweet-violets-release-daya

I just love this background image.  Today we so often just rely on the fast and easy for our cards and just use designer papers.  Sometimes this works to our advantage, but other times you and I want to be more in control of our card making.  That makes background stamps a Win-Win situation…I can decide on the exact colors instead of accepting what is in my paper hoard. Today I used a piece of American Crafts DP , a stripe, then added my image over it….Viola, I had just what I wanted !!!

I teamed up with the smallest violet image from Sweet Violets. This time I colored the flowers in pinks. Using the new daily standard a Nestability, gold Painty pen, a dash of ribbons and pearls, and the choice of papers was all I had left to do.

Viola! my card was done.

You should see what the FLLC  Senior Design Team did with this fabulous new background!  A lot of them did pull out their Thinking of You set to show you just what you can do with the whole collection!

Swing into Spring -Day Two

Today is the crux of this great release of our Swing into Spring…so here goes

We  have the right set in Swing Set.  Our newest artist Lauren Pope has created a wonderful set full of fun and versatility.  She has captured a fun memory we each have in our lives.  Each of us I am sure can remember fond time of a swing set, a swing hanging from an tree branch or even the swing on a porch.  We know the feel of the joy of pumping our legs in an effort to swing higher, or the times we pushed someone else, a friend or our small child on a swing.  I hope you will find just these kinds of memories as you go down the blog trail today and come Friday evening you will have a change to one of the first to purchase this neat set.

If you want a change to win this set just visit the Flourishes Newsletter by leaving today’s post and you could be our lucky winner.

Here is my card.  Your first look is at the card closed as I want to slowly reveal the rest of the card….enough taunting?????

OK…

swing-swing-upclose-closed-a

I have used the largest image in the set, stamping it several times with Hybrid Palette Burnt Umber and Chartreuse.  I then colored the images using my Copics scribbling with two shades of green and then using Marianne Walker’s dirty rag technique to give my trees a very realistic look.  Then two shades of brown and the branches were colored in.  I then used my Copic Air brush system and colored the area around the trees and branches.  As you will see I repeated this several times.

Here is why I had to repeat it several times…….swing-set-release-day-get-well-open

This is a Z Fold card.  Open you can see the branches of the tree to the top and our lovely lady is getting back into the swing of things.  This was a fun card to make.

Take another look from the front of the closed card.swing-set-trees-very-close

From this angle you can see the front of the card and the back of the  center fold and the back of the card.  The inside of the card was created on one piece of white cardstock, being carefully laid out.  The front of the center fold was stamped on a separate piece of cardstock then colored.  All were cut and glued to the front and back of the center fold with Zip glue.

I have talked way to long…so now move on the to the blog trail and check out all of todays wonderful creations of the Senior DT.

I just love this time of the month.  It is the time when Flourishes release it’s newest sets.  This month we have

I just love this new delicate stamp set, illustrated by our resident artist Marcella Hawley.

I have lots of wonderful sweet violets growing wild in our yard.  I don’t consider them intruders and treasure the beautiful little plants.  The blooms have a nice array of white, pink and lavender.  So it is no doubt that this one is going to be one of those romantic images I just love.

Here is my card to share with you today as my part of the sneaks peeks.

 sweet-violets-release-day-a1

I used the largest image in the stamp stet for this card.  The designer paper is from the Memory Box, Poppyfinch.  The lavish silk ribbon is one the newest additions to the Flourishes webstore.  The center on the bow is a brooch looking button I got at JoAnn’s.  The lacey edge was done with the MS Punch and accented with Kaiser flat back pearls also in the FLLC store.

Here is a look at the set which will be available at our Release Party on the SCS forum Friday night at 9:00 EST.sweet-violetsfinal-jmc-copy1

Today is a very special day for Sophie, our young intern at Flourishes.  She convinced me to let her help create a stamp set.  Lauren Pope was there one day when we were talking about and chuckled.  Just then her two room mates, Gigi & Chloe, stopped in at Flourishes.  Later Lauren sent me these darling sketches of the girls.  Needless to say Sophie squealed when she saw them.  This was all I heard, till I gave in.  So today is her big day.  Be sure to visit the Flourishes Newsletter and  see here into post of the stamp set and her friends.

Here is a look at the entire set.  Cute wouldn’t you say?

Here is the card I create for there big day.  This is Gigi.  She is such a darling girl.  She is just my kind of a true Southern girl…all sweet and nice!

I altered the Gigi image slightly removing her shopping bags.  I think she is just a cute this way and I am already envisioning other things to do with this sweet set of images.

Here is an up close look at her.gigi-birthday-upclosea

I worked with the girls when they came over to help Sophie with her big release project.  Now I don’t want to steal any of their thunder, so hop on over to the Flourishes Newsletter

The Flourishes Design Team is also helping Sophie to reveal her friends, so please visit their blogs as well.  Here are a blog links to all these great ladies:

There are times in our lives that just call for a celebration!  One of the newest significant celebrations in our social networking world is a blog achievements.  There are blogavessaries celebrations and one of the great I think is achievements.  Many folks collect buttons and add them as they are awarded, but stats is quite another.

Stats achievement of the caliber I am refering to are the really huge numbers in visits to a blog.  300,00 visits is no small potatoes for a blog achievement.  Two of my favorite designers and talented designers are both celebrating this achievement this week.  They are Julie Koerber, FLLC DT Co ordinator and Laura Fredrickson a senior designer for FLLC.  My hat is off to these very talented ladies.  It is obvious that they have a lot to offer and we all visit them on a regular basis.  I would suggest that you visit these fine ladies, they have some prizes and challenges for you to join in making the celebrating much more fun for all.

Here is a card I made to celebrate this great occasion for each of these great friends.

The Friday Focus over on the Flourishes Newsletter today has Latisha Yost hosting a tutorial on tying great bows.  She has both a picture and video tutorial…..Just Fab!!!

For my card I work on a new type of vellum that I received from a stamper, Karen Wallace (thanks Karen).  I will share much more on this later.  I colored the images with Prisma color pencils after Stamping with Hybrid Palette Charcoal for the roses and Jardin for the leaves.  Layers of coloring and blender pencils gave me a great finished image on this new vellum.

The rest of the card is made up of :

Cardstock: Old Olive and White, Vellum

Cuttlebug folder, Swiss Dot, Kaiser Pearls, beautiful old ribbon and wonderful wired checked ribbon

Viola!  I was done.  Before I say goodbi-love-roses_pink-check-bow_2upcloseajpgye here are a few more up close looks at this card.

This vellum is a Sherr joy ot color on and the images just want to jump off the paper.  The dimension of these images is wonderful..It’s gotta be the vellum..LOL

Today is the last day of the sneak peeks of What’s New in the Flourishes webstore this month.

The third set being released today is Timeless Quotes.  The saying goes that ” the best things come in small packages”  is certainly true with Timeless Quotes.  The quotes are beautiful and ones you will use over and over again.

There is also a new addition to Flourishes and again a small in size package that is filled with great things.  So just who and what is this newest addition.  It is none other than Jenni Bowlin!

That’s right, we’ve added the small 4″ x 4″ papers teamed with with small envelopes to make a BIG punch with small cards!

Here is the card that I made using Victorian collection of papers.

timeless-quotes-jeni-bowlin-release4a

Isn’t this  Simply Sophisticated!  This card was a breeze to make, requiring very little cutting.  The base card is Grey cardstock and the Moss Green and Jenni Bowlin were trimmed to fit.

The Quotes is the perfect size for this card and certainly is the finishing touch.

Here is the entire collection that comes in this package……with 24 sheets of Jenni Bowlin papers and 20 envelopes.

Victorian

There are seven more equally wonderful collections, so you will want to visit the Flourishes Newsletter to see them all.

Day Two has us revealing the set Ornamental Elements designed by Lauren Pope.  She has deleivered another show stopper with an ever versatile set.  This talented artist has given us a very organic element, filled with beautiful fluid lines.  There are two very easy to use elements in this set.

Here is my card for today’s part of the Release excitement:

ornamental-elements-release-sneaks1a

This is literally a ten minute card.  I had the design in my sketchbook.  I love the very clean look of the apple green and black and white of the card.  The color combination is one of my very favorites.  The nice almost 4 ” square of the largest element of the set makes it nice for a large focal image.  I added a button which I cut the shank from before attaching.  The simple layering of the image onto Celery Green and Black cardstock made for a striking balance.  The white cardstock is layered with a tiny black and white dot paper that I have had for years and will hate to see it end soon.  I can no longer find this paper.

Playing with the very squareness of this card, prompted me to place the image on the diagonal.  The card will still fit into a regular square envelope for mailing and added the flatness of the button makes it all the better.

Viola!  Easy -peasy in my book.

Supplies:

Stamp set: Ornamental Elements

Ink: Hybrid Palette Chartreuse

Cardstock: White image layering paper, Celery Green, Black, White, Designer paper

Accessories: Button from JoAnn’s, Black & White Checker ribbon (Flourishes)

Here’s the rundown of what’s happening this week with Flourishes:

  • On the Flourishes Newsletter you can have a chance to win this set just by leaving a comment — any comment – on the Ornamental Elements Preview post.
  • The Getting Sentimental Challenge is still active until Friday, so participating in that will enter you in a drawing for all three new sets.
  • Join us for the Release Party Friday night, March 13, 8 – 10 pm central at the Flourishes Forum on SCS for more previews, games and chances to win stamps.  Please note this is a new time for the party, which we hope will enable more folks to attend.  Just pop in at any point during the party hours and say “hi”.  You could be a lucky winner that easily!
  • The three new sets and more will be available in the store Friday night, the 13th, and released at some point during the party

Now, it’s time to check out all the other fabulous creations that our Senior Design Team has whipped up with this Ornamental Elements set! Be sure to stop by and say hi to Leslie, Christine, Cindy, Faith, Julie, Latisha, Laura, Stacy and Nancy.
