I’ve been tagged!

 

Oh My!  My special friend Karen (KrB’s Korner) tagged me and now I am supposed to tell you seven things about myself.

Mike said I should tell that —-

1- I am 5’8″ and  weigh 120. 

2-was born with a silver spoon in my mouth 

3-I have no tattoos,

4- I was a pole vaulting champion

5-play a mean hand of poker

6- I am a blond, and can prove it –I own shoulder pads

7-  I am not really good at telling jokes…

He said it and so I told you…..

 

But the Truth of the matter is this:

1.  I have been married to Michael, the love of my life for 17 years.  He has blessed me by sharing his children and grandchildren with me….a precious gift.  I am living a dream that I never even dreamed of for which I thank God!

2.   I taught Non Appropriated contracting and contract law for Dept of Army for Europe and word wide.  This opportunity opened the world to me and me to it!  My favorite job was Deputy for Desert Storm Family Support Operations at Headquarters, Department of the Army.  It was a 24/7 job and I was a lead briefer for Government Seniors and major news media to include CNN.  It was the very best way I could have picked to finish my career.

3.  The swan is my personal logo….I always thought of myself as an ugly duckling until I went to Europe for the first time in 1983….I realized I WAS a swan.  I was 35 and a late bloomer, and suddenly single lady that left for a 3 month trip and it took me 7 years to return home to the US.

4.  I had NEVER been to any kind of “home” party before signing up with SU and had NO idea of what that mean, not the how or the whys…I was dumbfounded when I found out what I had done!  I had to be assigned an up line–”what, in the dickens was that?”  All I wanted to do was teach techniques, etc in my own studio, the Atelier.   I see stamping as a way for anyone to become an artist extrandoinaire…having great images in hand helps!  Flourishes is my dream come true!

5.  I am the oldest of eight children.  I have 5 sisters and 2 brothers.  We were all born and raised in Houma, La.  I attended Catholic schools from kindergarten thru 12th grade.  I am a graduate of Nicholls State University, also known as “Harvard on the bayou”.

6.  I lived in Germany for a total of 9 plus years.  I have traveled throughout all of the countries of Europe, been to Russia and China.  Can shop in many languages!  Seen and done things I never even dreamed about!

7.  Some of my fairytale life have included having lunch with Shirley Temple Black in the American embassy in Prague, after having done some work for the embassy; sitting in the British Royal box for a command performance. I watched and lived through the changes that took place in many of the countries and cities of Europe.  I taught from Einstein’s personal podium at his think tank in the Harnick House in Berlin, East German, just before the wall came down.

Well now you know more than you ever wanted to about me LOL  Thank you for taking your time to visit with me today in the Atelier.

It’s All in the Details

Yesterday I shared with you the elements of my gift package ensemble made with the JustRite Baking Ensemble.  Today I want to share some of the details and how to-s that you may find helpful in making your own gift packages.

So here is my finished product:

 

Here are the elements that I started with to make the project.  These very simple items were turned into Cinderella like articles once they were treated to a bit of TLC.

1-The candy box was a very nice one that last year I emptied onto a plate and put the box away for a future project. 

2 The glass bottle was as I said yesterday generously and willing donated by my husband that will use any excuse to guzzle a Starbucks cold. 

3.The bag is a new product that will soon be on the shelves at Flourishes.  The generous bag is approximately 4″ X 9″ with a fold down reclosable top.  It is lined and food safe and will prove to be a wonderful way to share your wonderful creations with family and friends.

THE DETAIL MAKE IT SPECIAL!

This Picture shows a lot of the detains in the box.  After conveirng the box.  I added some extra details to make it even more special…I’m just a detail kind of girl..LOL.  If you look closely at the bottom part of the box you will notice that where the DP and box come together I added a 1/4″ red satin ribbon to finish the edges.  I really think that our mechanics in a project need to be hidden and this is a easy way to do this.  I simply used the double stick tape in the 1/8″ size along the joining edge then removed the paper side one side at a time and was very careful to kept a straight line.  The is really and easy task with the Sookwang tape.   I got this from Diana at Scor Pal and just LOVE the stuff……I have it in most of the sizes.  Living in Florida where the humidity is a problem I really want my project to stay together and this tape is the answer.  Next I added red and white gingham ribbon to the top where the edges of the paper came together. 

The TAG:     Using the Baking set and and additional 2 5/8″ wood mount for this set I was ready for the task at hand:                           

 

…I wanted a very rich luscious look so I choose to ink up the JustRite image and wording ring with my encore gold ink and then added SU Gold Glory embossing powder.  To cut the image, I used my Nestabilities in both the plain circle and scallops.

                        

This picture shows you the cuts I made, with the exception of the Chocolate Chip circle used for the box.  I used the very same sizes on  each of the the tags just varying the colors, theme, and styles of tags….but each one has a circle tag from which I proceeded.

After embossing the image I layered it on to the Chocolate Chip and now doesn’t it look quite professional?

I added a 1″ red satin ribbon and tied it all together with the red and white gingham.  I was pleased so far.

THE GOURMET COCOA MIX TAG

This was oh so easy 

 I used these Copic markers to color the tag which had been stamped onto Very Vanilla using Hybrid Palette Burnt Umber.              

As you can see very little was done to enhance this tag.  Simple coloring with the Copics and blender, a dab of the Liquid Pearls to make the whipped dream stand tall with peaks and this part of the tag was done.  Because this was going to hang on the bottle it needed a little umph.  With that in mind I added two layers, one in Chocolate Chip cardstock and a slightly smaller in the DP, both were cut with the rectangle Nesties.  The pieces were all attached and I punched a small hole in the corner and ran a small red satin ribbon thru and placed it on the bottle.

THE COOKIE BAG:

How to impress your Family & Friends!  This will be an easy way using the new soon to be available bag at Flourishes.  It is an undiscoverd beauty just sitting there ready to be dressed up and given away. It is a food safe bag, but don’t limit yourself to food with this great little treasure.  To dress up this bag–a soon to be Cinderella, I measured the bag for length and width and cut two strips of DP paper to fit.  These were attached to the bag with Sookwang tape.  Before attaching the back strip I made my front flap on which the cookie detail was adhered.  Now for a little deception, the bottom striped” flap” is made from the striped paper that was left over from covering the top of the fudge box.  I simply trimmed it to size and attached it to the front of the bag. It will not move.  The dotted flap/tag  (this does actually flap from the back to the front of the bag) was cut using a square scallop Nesties in Very Vanilla and just a little over half of the actual size of the square.  The scallop tag was attached to the back of the bag, then the second brown dotted strip was taped and attached to cover the mechanics on the back of the bag.  The front of the flap of vanilla dotted DP was finished off using the same edge treatment as I used in the entire process.  I made my tag stamping on Real Red using SU Craft Vanilla ink…still not a good photo.  The scallop next layer has a simple dot in each scallop, then a second scallop, this time in Chocolate Chip was layered.  Between the layers I hid my two streamers of the red and white gingham.

JustRite Baking Ensemble and I made an Ensemble!

The last part of the much awaited JustRite shipment arrived here at Flourishes.  So now the store has great stock of all the items, including the Baking Ensemble and the Birthday Ensemble and ALL of the wood block work with all of the items. 

 Today I have made up a ensemble of gift packages using the Baking Ensemble. I hope that you will be inspired to start making creative packaging for your holiday goodies that you will shower on your family and friends.

Today I am sharing the general view of the ensemble and tomorrow I will share with you the particulars for making these cute packages.

The box for fudge:

Doesn’t that make you want to open the box and savor the morsels of fudge?  I will have more photos and instructions in tomorrow’s post.

This is my bottle of Gourmet Cocoa Mix.  You are right, I reused a Starbucks bottle. My hubby is more that eager to drink the contents as he say s”If I must!” and “For a Good Cause” LOL.  The  coloring on this label is the most I did on any of the items.  I used  liquid pearls to make the whipped cream on the top of the mug and IRL it looks real and good enough to eat!

For my third piece of the ensemble I made a cookie bag.

 

 

 

It is really cute and functional.  The base is made from a food safe bag soon to be available at Flourishes!  It is lined and will be the source of many creative options.  Watch for the bags to show up any day now.  I will have more details of these tomorrow.

The actual label is stamped in SU Vanilla Craft ink, but I was having a hard time with the color showing up correctly.  Maybe I can get a better shot tomorrow using morning outdoor light.

 

So Viola!  This was a great deal of fun.  I love the colors of chocolate, vanilla, and red.  The papers are ones I have had from Stampin’ Up! and were just right (no punster here…hehe) for this project.

Frightful Invite

Today as I worked here in the Atelier I had a strong pull to use the chandelier from Flourishes Summer on the Patio set.  What I had in mind was just not right, so I merely started playing and ended up with a Frightful Invitation that is fun and right for the season just around the corner.  Something Ghoulish Awaits!

   Here it is.  It was fun to do and some how a very playful card emerged that would be great for a Halloween party, should you be hosting such a ghoulish affair.

   I used Flourished Elements’ largest image to depict a macob setting, straight out of the swamps with moss hanging and all.  Both it and the chandelier are stamped using Hybrid Palette Noir, highlighted with the Ranger White Essential pen and then really dolled up with my always handy glitter pen.  I also highlighted all the swirls on the large element, but alas the photo does not do it justice.  The candles are colored in orange then also highlighted with the Copic Spica orange metallic pen.  It is just oozing with sparkle…just perfect for the party, party, party mood of Halloween.  The sentiment is also from the Summer on the Patio set.  The scalloped black ribbon is from the Mary Art collection in the Flourishes store as is the wonderful reversible gold and orange ribbon.  It is layered on Basic Grey papers  and then all adhered onto black cardstock.

Twilight-With Sympathy

Michael, my hubby ,asked that I make him some sympathy cards.  Two of his former colleagues from work had passed away and he wanted to send their wives a special card.  Since I did not know either of these ladies and their backgrounds I wanted something fitting but right.  Something that would appeal to a woman without being to fussy, but convey the sentiment Mike wanted to deliver.

I pulled out the new Marcella Hawley set Forest of Trees, a set I just love.

 

  My next step was paper and colors. 

 Elegant Eggplant

Now to work:  I cut my base card to an A2 size (4 1/2″ x 5 1/2″) out of the Blush Blossom.  Next I cut the next layer from the Perfect Plum reducing the size of the sheet by 1/4″ all around and finally cutting my white cardstock again reducing the size of the white to 1/4 ” smaller that the Perfect Plum.  I scored the card and placed in a nice edge using my Teflon bone folder.  Now I am ready to stamp.  This is a simple technique I know that many of you have used, but for those that have not done this before here are the details:

1st -I stamped my center tree.  I have chosen the tree in winter–the leafless one and stamped it in Perfect Plum, stamped off once on scrap paper.

 

The card on the right is my actual cardstock.  It looks a yellowish against the copy bright white paper.  Then I stamped the image again using Pale Plum and so it looks like this now:

                                

Just the slightest variation in the colors will make a lot of difference in just a few steps.

Now to add some more trees.  This time I am using the tree from the set that looks as if it has leaves and I stamped it in Purple Plum for a bit more distinction in the trees.

So now we have some depth in our trees.  This is important for the eye.  It needs a focus image, images that are forward and some more distant.  In the next step I will actually drop in a line across the paper to give us a definitive horizon and then another in the distance.

  So here is what that looks like.

I used my sponge and reinker of Blush Blossom and streaked it across the cardstock in several horizontal lines.  Next I will add in the Pale Plum and Perfect Plum for more of the sunset at twilight look.   I still need more definition so will add more Perfect Plum and for the real depth, I pulled out Bordering Blue.  It has a wonderful smoky blue cast that will be perfect to that final touch on our horizon line. 

             There I think that our scene is just right…Not to worry, it will look perfect in just a moment.  So I am now assembling my layers, white with scene, Perfect Plum, and card base of Blush Blossom.  I used a scrap of Blush Blossom and stamped the sentiment in Perfect Plum, layered it behind with Perfect Plum affixed it to the card with dimensionals, added a lavender Kaiser Pearl, that I touched up with Perfect Plum marker, tied on a sheer organza lite pink ribbon and here is the finished product.

 

I think any lady would be pleased to receive this card….at least I hope so anyway.  Mike just walked in the Atelier and he likes it..Yes, Mikie likes it!  It’s a wrap for me.

Alzheimer’s Steals Lives–Let’s Help to Stop It!

  I know this personally.  This awful disease stole a man I loved!  It left an empty stare, unknowing eyes,  a loving man that no longer recognized his wife, but talked incessantly about his beautiful bride!  A man that thought his daughters were his sisters, save one.  Alzheimer’s did not cause his death, but it robbed us all of his last years.  Those years were tough, very tough.  Alzheimer’s took away my dad!

  I, for some unknown reason, was the only daughter he remembered to his last breath….I know, I held him as he passed from this life.  Mike and I returned home from our retirement tour in Germany.  Pensacola was not the retirement spot we had on our agenda, but it would become home.  After a few weeks of staying with my parents and looking for “our” perfect retirement home, Mike asked me if I had taken a good hard look at my parents.  He said “your father is not the same man, your mother looks tired, very very weary”.  I stopped in my tracks, could I have missed such a huge change.  We had come home early to host my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary.  It had been a whirlwind, but now life was back to normal.  No, I had not noticed or had I just not wanted to see what was before my eyes.

That evening the proofs of the 50th wedding anniversary were delivered.  As we looked through them, what had been hidden in real life glared at me.  Dad did not look like Dad!  No, there had to be something else wrong.

The next day I talked to my mom.  She agreed that dad needed a good checkup.  He had not really been his funny self.  So the task began, what was the cause.  I remember one day in a doctor’s office as the doctor asked my dad, what day it was, what time of year, who was the president, that my father looked over at me and said to get him out of there, “This doctor is confused.  He doesn’t know it’s Wednesday or that Bush was just elected president.  I think this Doctor is going crazy!”  Dad was completely lucid.  A lucidity that would come and go.  Dad was eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.  An extremely difficult reality set in.  Life had changed and now we must too. 

And so it goes with Alzheimer’s.  We had an Alzheimer’s counselor to my parents home for a family meeting.  The news was grim.  The meeting did not go well.  Some of my siblings would just not accept the diagnose or the changes that it would mean in both my mother and father’s lives.  The next 2 1/2 years were extremely difficult. 

The moments, both good and bad, are now treasured in my heart.  I learned to love on many levels, to help care as I had never cared before.  In many ways I became the parent, a role I was not prepared for or had asked for, but it was starring me in the face.  I could with the grace of God get throrugh these times. 

My dad loved to feed the squirrels.  The moment I saw Whimsical Autumn I knew I would make a card with the squirrel……for my dad.  So dad this one is for you.

Today we, all of Flourishes,  join Carolyn, “Cammie” King at her blog, My Blog, and GinaK Designs in a strong statement of support of the Alzheimer’s Association.  The very moment I saw the announcement I knew I had to contact them and ask if we could join in a unified support of this action.  I also approached the other flourishes, Nancy Kirk and Sharon Doolittle.  They agreed.  My next step was to Julie Koerber , our Design Team  coordinator.  Would she poll the design team and Friends of Flourishes bloggers team.  Yes, they would join us in today’s effort.  You can too.  Join us in the hop between the blogs.  See the great cards made for this day.  If you can, buy this set as Carolyn is donating 100% of her proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of her grandmother, another stolen by Alzheimer’s.  I personally thank GinaK for taking this and so many other charitable activities on and sharing with all of the big hearted stampers.  This great cadre of talented folks know how to circle around, truly coming together for great causes.  I know you will again!

Second Look at JustRite Love Birds

Hi All.  Sorry I am a little late with this Thursday post…yeah, I know it’s Friday….so tomorrow will be Saturday which I will take off and be back on schedule Monday.  Actually if the truth be known, I misplaced this card in the giant reordering in the Atelier! 

    

When I made Wednesday’s card using the SCS and self imposed challenges I had so much mojo flowing that I made this second card to follow up.  I kept in place all of the original challenges…color: Always Artichoke, Basic Grey, and Riding Hood Red, my challenges…no white and an anniversary card.

So here the base card is Riding Hood Red which I cut and scored using the best bone folder ever!  I have owned many but this Teflon one from Flourishes is my personal fav!  The next layer is from the brand new paper in the store….Memory Box, Winterberry.  Yes, those are the very same birds, stamped in Riding Hood Red ink from the Birds in Vine set that I used in the last card.  The JustRite Wedding Ensemble was used again with the same Basic Grey ink.  This time however I stamped directly onto the DP then slit the paper and ran a luscious and full of color plaid taffeta ribbon.  The little “bows” are actually squished ribbons that are held together with the smallest glue dots.  How clever is that!

This was a truly simply card that almost got up and made itself…LOL.  It was fast and I love the end results.  I am so grateful that you have taken the time to look in here at the Atelier.   Thanks for coming and please come again.

Love Birds that are JustRite!

I love making cards.  I love challenges.  I love to stretch my limits, I also love it when my mojo is really pumping.  Today I have some special motivation and challenges.  They are:

1-color challenges on SCS:

        Riding Hood Red,

        Basic Grey and

       Always Artichoke. 

2-I added a couple of my own challenges-NO white, Not too feminine but elegant!

3-I wanted a special card for an anniversary for a special couple. 

Now how to put all of the thoughts together in a pleasing card? 

   Yes, I had set a challenge for myself, had I worked myself into a self made box.   I could see a romantic, yet elegant but not too fussy, man friendly card.  The colors were OK, well maybe a little drab, but I certainly could spice them up…that new Riding Hood Red is beautiful.  The Grey and Green…OK good men’s colors. 

 Now for my need of romantic image, but not too smaltschy….hum let me look at all the Flourishes images….there must be just the right thing.  Lace Heart is great, but not for this card, no flowers, nothing sketchy today, I need a strong image.  OH, I just had a brain storm, those wonderful new birds for the Birds in Vine may just be the answer.  But these birds will need my focal image and I don’t want to use white paper–another part of my self imposed challenge.  I selected two birds that look like they could be mates.  I position and reposition, stamped color on color and cut them out.  Not quite the look I had in mind.  I finally have positioned the two images in what I think is the perfect position and stamp in on my scrap paper.  Yes, these birds are right what I was looking for….Love Birds.

So now I need just the right paper or image to work with as a background.  I tried the Harlequin set with hearts…nice but not for today.  I pulled out some of my vast stash of background paper (yes, I think I am a paper hoarder).  Low and behold there is a wonderful background paper that I think will be the perfect setting for my birds…the color and texture are grand, elegant but not too much for the hubby. 

 But I still need a way to tie this all together…more looking.  The another light goes on in my head….didn’t we just get the new JustRite items in yesterday here at Flourishes.  Now just imagine me making a mad dash to the shipping room and going thought the boxes.  AH HA, here is just what I had remembered from CHA….the JustRite Wedding Ensemble and it does have a great sentiment for anniversaries!  Sweet!  While I am in the shipping room I pulled out some wonderful ribbons to use.  A great dark red satin and Grey Velvet.  I am set.  Now to put the pieces together. 

The hardest part was actually stamping the couple of birds directly onto the beautiful background paper.  What if it wasn’t right?  Then I’m having the conversation with myself…”It is just a piece of paper, please just get on with it”  So I take the plunge. I am glad I did.  I think I will just darken up the image, to make them a little bolder, so using my blender pen I picked the ink form the pad and carefully intensified their color.  Pleasing to me.  On to the next step.  I am keeping the rest of this card simple.  Always Artichoke is the base card, no corner treatments.  A simple straight line of ribbons stacked on each other.  Again, I am pleased with the look.  The sentiment is stamped on the Going Grey with Basic Grey, cut our with a circle Nestabilities (couldn’t live without the basics!)  It still just needs a little humph so I cut a second circle this time a size larger and in the Riding Hood Red paper and stacked.  Layer and attach some larger glue dots on  and set off to the right to balance my asymmetrical placement of the birds.

Viola!  The card is done and I think I have meet my challanges…but mostly I am pleased with the outcome.  Want to see this card?  OK Here it is:

My First Christmas Card of the Season!

 I am making my first of many Christmas cards for this year.  Today’s challenge on SCS was to try a new technique…called a Glitter Surprise.  This was just right for my card today.  I have actually had this card in my mind for sometime, but finding the time to get it on paper was my challenge.  The SCS challenge just pushed me on to do it NOW!

To create the background I used the Damask background stamp by Flourishes.  I “inked” the image with a freshly soaked Hybrid Palette clear Glue pad and placed it on white cardstock.  Then I liberally covered the image with dazzling diamond glitter and heat set it.  I set this section aside and worked on the focal image.  Using the spruce tree from Forest of Trees I inked it well with Handsome Hunter ink and stamped it  onto more white cardstock.  After the ink was dry, I applied Copic dark green glitter pen for some sparkle on my tree then very sparingly applied thick tacky glue to the base of the tree and on the branches. I then applied Ivory Flower Soft…..it looks just like fresh snow!  The tiny red bird is from the Birds in Vine set–and I used “Shrinky Dink” (I got it from Michael’s)  white film, stamped the bird in Rose Red (the color intensifies as it shrinks–so think lighter when you stamp), heated it to shrink it down and glued it onto the tree.  The sentiment is from Flourishes Rejoice set.  I simply used Real Red and Handsome Hunter markers direct to the image. I then added some of the wonderful sheer dark red May Arts ribbon also from Flourishes.

I cut the layers, just 1/8″ larger that the images, glued them all in place and attached to the card.  This card came together in record time…..I guess my mind had completely worked this out before hand….LOL
